Guidelines : Timetable

Semester
Requirement
2 (at beginning of semester) Select Advisor
2 (at the end of February) Submit First Year Plan of Study
3 (before end of December) Form Provisional Committee and submit departmental Committee Form signed by all
4 (at the end of February) Submit Second-Year Plan of Study (includes 3 areas to be mastered for Qualifying Exam)
4 (at the end of the semester) (beginning Spring 2008)
M.A. oral and written exam
4 (at the end of the semester) Submit to committee preliminary reading list for Qualifying Exam
4 & 5 (summer between)
Conduct preliminary field research
5 (by end of semester) Form Ph.D. Committee and submit Grad School Committee Form
5 (by end of semester) Submit to committee preliminary reading list for Qualifying Exam
5 & 6 (as due) Submit grant proposals for dissertation research funding
6 (early in semester) Submit list of broad questions to committee
6 (at the end of February) Submit Third-Year Plan of Study
6 (during March/April) Complete written and oral portions of Qualifying Examination
6 (at least 2 weeks after Qualifying Exam) Complete Dissertation Proposal Workshop
7 and beyond
(extension must be requested from the Graduate School if final defense is not held within 4 years of completion of the Dissertation Proposal Workshop)
Conduct fieldwork, write dissertation, and defend it in Final Examination
