A Ph.D. committee typically consists of four members. Three committee members are the primary advisor and two additional primary faculty in Cultural Anthropology. The fourth, often referred to as the "outside" committee member, must either be faculty in another department or unit at Duke, or faculty at another institution. PhD committees may include a fifth member, who may be either primary faculty in Cultural Anthropology or an additional "outside" member.
To formalize your committee, email the DGSA (CCing your primary advisor) with the following:
- The names of your committee memebers
- The departmental affiliation of your external committee member
If your external committee member is external to Duke, include the following:
- An External Committee Member Form (available in the Cultural Anthropology PhD — Forms and Files Box folder)
- A recent copy of your external member's CV
If your committee changes at any time after registration, email the DGSA, CCing your primary advisor and the DGS, with the updated information. If changes include a new external committee member employed outside of Duke, include the additional items above.
