The Invention of Ethnography
CULANTH 427S
Focus on Bronislaw Malinowski and his role in the invention of the ethnographic method through his fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands in the early decades of the 20th century. Malinowski's publications examined in the light of the tradition of ethnography they spawned. Malinowski's biography, field notes, and diaries will be considered as will more recent criticisms of Malinowski and the ethnographic method itself. One course.
