Decolonizing Social Theory

This course is the first in a two-semester sequence revised to address what was exposed by the murder of George Floyd (May 25, 2020); the global COVID19 pandemic; and in recognition of the necessary intellectual work to align the discipline with a social reality in tension with a “Great Books” approach. “Great Books” alone cannot account for a world connected by histories of empire, settler colonialism, indigenous genocide, white supremacy, racism, and misogyny. Instead we propose a decolonial reading of those traditional texts previously deemed formative to anthropological thought. Instructor: Folch and Makhulu
