Popular Culture: Theory and Ethnography


This courses studies influential theories of popular and commodity culture from the last century, including the work of Marx and Gramsci, scholars of the Frankfurt school (Benjamin, Adorno), Birmingham School (Hall, Gilroy, Williams), and two decades of ethnographic scholarship (Gingsburg, Larkin, Varzi). We will place considerable emphasis on themes of media and mediation, visuality and the image, the human and the machine, and the digital. Instructor: Stein
