Language Requirement

All doctoral candidates must demonstrate spoken and/or written competence in at least one language other than their native language that is applicable to their planned research program. This requirement may be satisfied by taking a departmentally designed language test or, alternatively, by submitting acceptable evidence of sufficient coursework or other background in the language.

Students are strongly encouraged to seek out and attend intensive summer language courses as early in your graduate career as possible.

Review the Language at Duke website to see our course offerings. Please also be aware that you can take courses at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Students who are non-native speakers of English are exempt from this policy, provided their native language is the primary language in their area of study.
